Can I reuse my candle container?
Please do! The beautiful recycled glass containers with flat cork lids make excellent little vessels even after your candle has burned all the way through. Both stickers are low-adhesive, so they should peel off without any problems. I clean out my used candle containers by softening the wax (either after it’s burned down and cooled a bit or with a little very hot water) and scraping out the soft, solid wax and the metal wick clip with a metal spatula or old butter knife that I don’t use in the kitchen anymore. Then use a mild soap and a sponge to scrub out any remaining wax and any residue from the wick sticker on the bottom of the container in warm water. Then I let them dry completely, and voila! The perfect place to store cotton balls, loose change, or (if you’re me) pour another candle!
Does Fiddlehead do custom fragrances?
Yes, I love to work on custom projects! You can fill out the form on the “Collaborations” page, or email info@fiddleheadcandles.com for a quote and to get the ball rolling.
How long can I burn my candle?
Fiddlehead candles have a burn time of 40 hours, but it is recommended not to burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time and to follow all Common-Sense Candle Safety Guidelines.
Is it just me, or does the flame get lower after burning for a long time?
If the flame height gets low after burning for a long period of time, you might need to tap off some excess ash or burnt wood that has collected at the top of the wick. Then your flame should return to a nice normal height.
What are the Common-Sense Candle Safety Guidelines?
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from anything flammable.
Do not burn candles in a draft.
Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

What's so great about wood wicks anyway?
Well, I would say the best thing about them is the soft, crackling sound they make when they burn. Anytime you use a wood wick, it’s kind of like having your own mini fireplace and it adds to the ambience and ritual of burning a candle. Because of their shape they produce a unique horizontal flame that looks especially beautiful glowing inside Fiddlehead’s beautiful painted glass containers. And also, Fiddlhead uses wood wicks that are completely American made, sourced and manufactured in the U.S.A. from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Mills.
What's the difference between paraffin wax and soy wax?
Okay, buckle up. Basically, paraffin wax is a natural product derived from decayed animal and plant material (sheesh), and it is the most popular kind of wax used in candlemaking. Chances are, if you have pillar or taper candles, they’re paraffin, and it’s the wax typically used by that big brand of scented candles that is definitely not from the American South. Paraffin has lots of benefits for candlemakers - it dries hard and brittle, it has a large crystal structure and high melt point, it pours predictably smooth and it’s overall pretty easy to work with. But good old soy is a fairly new alternative to paraffin, it’s all-natural, renewable, non-toxic and biodegradable and is made from soybean oil (not dead critters…just saying). It has a beautiful creamy off-white appearance, it’s softer than paraffin and it burns a lot longer since it can burn at a cooler temperature than paraffin.
When will my candle(s) ship?
Fiddlehead maintains a very small inventory and most candles will be poured-to-order. In order to properly cure the candles before shipment, please allow up to 3-5 business days for order processing before your order will ship. If you are concerned about the shipping timeline or receiving an item by a certain date, please feel free to reach out to claire@fiddleheadcandles.com prior to placing an order.
Why does my wooden wick keep putting itself out?
Ah hah, well this advice is going to be a little counterintuitive, but you probably need to trim the wick. If the wick isn’t hot, you can probably just crumble off the blackened top. It might seem like a taller wick would make a larger flame, and while it might initially right when it’s lit, if the wick is too far above the surface of the wax, then the wax won’t flow up to the top of the wick, so the candle won’t give off it’s fragrance and will burn itself out. To keep your candle burning evenly and safely, keep the wick trimmed to be no longer than 1/4” - 3/16” (6.4mm - 4.8mm) above the wax.
Why is the surface of my candle bumpy after I burn it?
Fiddlehead candles are made of all-natural 100% soy wax - which is spectacular because soy wax is natural, renewable, non-toxic and biodegradable! But unfortunately, that post-burning bumpy top kinda comes with the territory. Bumpiness and surface blemishes occur whenever the rate of cooling for the soy wax is inconsistent. The rate of cooling gets pretty tricky to predict once the candle has been lit and extinguished - sometimes it’ll be smooth as a baby’s backside, and sometimes the wax will harden looking a little dry and rough. But back to good news! This bumpiness and uniqueness goes hand in hand with using an all-natural wax, and the imperfections are merely cosmetic and will not affect the performance of the candle.
